August 6, 2015—-St. Thomas Aquinas High School alum Brandon Goldman earned his third U.S. Olympic Trials cut on opening day of the Phillips 66 National Championships Thursday at Northside Swim Center in San Antonio, Tex.

During a time trial in the 200-meter individual medley, the Lousiana State University junior-to-be competing for Tiger Aquatics went 2:04.09, well below the 2:05.09 cut and long course LSU team record.

Goldman also has his Trial cuts in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke. He hopes to swim another time trial this week in the 400 IM.

It will be Goldman’s U.S. Olympic Trials debut, a dream he shared with his mentor, Hall of Fame and six-time Olympic coach Michael Lohberg at Coral Springs Swim Club, his former club. Lohberg died on April 4, 2011 after a lengthy battle with aplastic anemia.

Goldman, 20, who trained with Dave Gibson and Swim Fort Lauderdale during holiday break and his college club team over the summer, is enjoying an outstanding collegiate and club career.

“I would like to think I am swimming better than ever,” Goldman said Thursday night.

“I definitely had a great swim today, I am super shocked to get this one today,” Goldman said. “It made me feel really good. I was disappointd with SECs and had a hard time coming back from that. It’s nice to turn it around.

“I am excited about going to Olympic trials,” Goldman said. “It’s going to be so awesome. I want to swim fast and see what happens.”

Highlighting open night action in the finals:

Michael Andrew, 16, of Indie Swimming re-broke his own national age group record in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:00.68. His previous 15-16 record was 1:01.00 set in mid-July. Andrew won the “B” final.

Japan’s Junya Koga, 28, of Club Wolverine broke the U.S. Open record in a 50-meter backstroke time trial in 24.36, breaking his own record of 24.50.

True Sweetser, Gator Swim Club, raced to a fast fifth place finish in the 400 Freestyle with a 3:49.33.

Friday’s events are: women’s and men’s 100-meter backstroke, women’s and men’s 200-meter freestyle, men’s 200-meter butterfly and women’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay.
